Secure Offsite Backup

Easy to use GUI rsyncX front-end

Your rsync.net filesystem is also accessible with an easy to use GUI front-end to the rsync command called rsyncX. This simple point and click interface simplifies rsync backups and allows job scheduling.

In general, we always recommend the simpler, built-in rsync command but rsyncX is a perfect utility for users unfamiliar with the rsync command line tool.

Downloading and Installing rsyncX

rsyncX can be downloaded at this location.

After downloading the "RsyncX_v2.1.tgz" file, double-click on it and it will unpack into a folder named "RsyncX_v2.1". Open this folder and double-click on the "RsyncX_v2.1.pkg" package file.

You may accept the defaults throughout the installation.

Configuring Your Backup

Once you have installed rsyncX, you can find it and run it by opening the Applications folder, then opening the Utilities folder, and double-clicking on the rsyncX icon.

When rsyncX first runs, the "Simple RsyncX" window will open. Do not begin configuration in this "Simple RsyncX" window. Instead, ignore that window (do not close it, as that will end the program), and select "Quick RsyncX Script Generator" from the "Tools" menu.

You will see an interface that looks like this:

Although there are many configurable options in this interface, only a few of them are needed.

- Source Path: Enter the local directory that you wish to back up. For example, /Users

- The "This Script" pulldown menu: Change this to "Pushes Files To Destination Address".

- Destination Machine IP Address: Set this to the rsync.net hostname that was sent in your welcome email.

- Save Script As: Enter the local file you would like to save this script as. A good choice is: /Users/YOURNAME/rsyncx.backup

- Login To Dest As: Insert your rsync.net username that was sent in your welcome email.

From the "During Rsync Show" dropdown near the bottom of the window, choose "No Progress Metering".

Finally, the following checkboxes in the center of the window should be CHECKED:

- Add Files To Destination

- Synx without HFS+ File Info

Your correctly configured RsyncX Script Generator will look like this:

Now Press the button on the bottom of the window labeled "Generate". You will be asked to confirm this - click "Yes".

A terminal window will appear with some output related to the script generation - the last line of which will read "[Process completed]". You can simply close that window and/or Quit the terminal application.

Running Your Backup

Now that you have generated your backup script, you may close the "Quick RsyncX Script Generator" window and choose "RsyncX Scheduler" from the "Tools" menu.

You will see an interface that looks like this:

Now click the button labeled "Add Event". The "Add RsyncX Event" dialog box will appear

Please see the entire Macintosh Integration Guide for details of other access methods.
