sshFS Access with MacFUSE / Macfusion
sshFS is now available for OSX! This means that your rsync.net filesystem can be mounted as a standard local filesystem over an encrypted transport. This allows you to interact with your rsync.net filesystem as if it were a local filesystem, and provides additional flexibility (and speed) over the standard "connect to server" in the Finder.
Installing MacFUSE
Visit the main project page for MacFUSE here and download the latest disk image for MacFUSE. Open the MacFUSE disk image and double-click on the MacFUSE.pkg file. The application can be installed using the installers default options. Please restart your computer immediately after installing MacFUSE-Core.
Installing Macfusion
Download the latest version of Macfusion here and simply copy it into your Applications folder. When you run the program, you will be notified that "the macfusion agent is not running". You should check the box marked "Start agent automatically on login" and then click the "Start" button.
Running Macfusion
If you just installed Macfusion and clicked "Start" the (very minimal) application will already be running - you will see a small blank window with a "+" sign in the lower left-hand corner. Click this "+" sign and choose "SSHFS" from the list. You will see a window:
In the very top field, type a descriptive name for the connection - like "rsync.net offsite filesystem". In the "Host" field, enter the hostname that you were given in your welcome email. In the "User Name" field, enter your four or five digit username given to you in your welcome email. In the "Password" field, enter your password. The "Path" field should be left blank. Now click the "OK" button. You may be presented with a warning that Macfusion.app wants to use your keychain information. You should choose "Always Allow" or "Allow". You will now be returned to the small Macfusion window, but this time with your newly created connection as the first item in the list.
Simply click "Mount".
Your rsync.net filesystem is now mounted locally on your Mac. You can see it in the Finder by choosing "Computer" from the "Go" menu. You may use this mounted filesystem in the Finder, and with other applications, just like you would any other folder on your Mac. IMPORTANT: When you are finished using the mounted drive (you may leave it connected indefinitely if you like) you should "Unmount" it from the Macfusion application to ensure that all data has been safely written to the remote filesystem.
Notes
If you ever receive a timeout, or authentication error, after you click "mount", ignore it and simply click "mount" again to retry. You can quickly mount and manage your remote filesystems with the Macfusion Menuitem - simply choose "Start Macfusion Menuitem" from the Macfusion main menu. From the Menuitem you can mount new sshFS filesystems as well as quickly mount existing favorites.
We do not recommend using sshFS, or any local mount in the Finder, as your actual backup method. These methods are simply nice, convenient ways to interact with your files and to transfer a few files up or down - the actual, scheduled backup of the bulk of your files should be done with an actual backup tool.
